At BYBI we are all about your best skin. This includes keeping your microbiota happy, healthy and in balance using natural, sustainable products. If you’re thinking micro-what-now? Yeah, we hear you hunnay. The microbiome. It’s like a sensitive little thing, that has a massive impact on your overall body health. The official definition is ‘a community of microorganisms (such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses) that inhabit a particular environment and especially the collection of microorganisms living in or on the human body'.
In a more human language: Our body is full of (helpful) bacteria, viruses and fungi, also known as the microbiome. The microbiome is in particular related to our gut which we've written about here but the billions of bacteria, fungi and viruses that compromises the skin microbiota, is known as your skin's microbiome.
A surprising fact? The more strains of bacteria you have, the healthier your skin is. The natural bacteria help to maintain a healthy skin barrier but when these get disturbed, your skin barrier becomes vulnerable and there can be an overgrowth in pathogenic bacteria. This can lead to eczema, psoriasis and perioral dermatitis (scary enough, a few of Team BYBI members have been struggling with eczema, perioral dermatitis and rosacea, which surely can be related to a disturbed microbiota).
So HOW do you keep your microbiota healthy and happy?
To have a healthy skin microbiome, it’s important to keep it in balance and not disrupt your natural microbiome too much - i.e. by over exfoliating or cleansing - but also to add skin-happy nutrients like prebiotics, ceramides and Omega-6 and Omega-9s to your skincare. Below are our recommendations for how to keep your microbiome in check, and what products to use if you've thrown it out of whack.
Remove bacteria and grime using an antibacterial and balancing makeup-cleanser
Swipe Clean is gentle oil-cleanser that effectively removes make-up and grime from your skin. Black cumin, moringa and jojoba have antibacterial effects and remove waterproof make-up, foundation and mascara whilst dissolving grime and dirt, without being too harsh on your microbiome. Balancing hibiscus and papaya oils are naturally high in AHA’s that helps dissolve excess sebum leaving your skin soft and cleansed.
Tip: Swipe Clean is made without essential oils and fragrance which means it’s gentle enough for sensitive skin and pregnant and breastfeeding mummas.
Cleanse your skin with a sulphate free soap once or twice a day.
Crystal Clear is our prebiotic cleanser with salicylic acid that helps balance your skin’s microbiome, keeps your skin healthy and helps prevent breakouts. The prebiotic in Crystal Clear, inulin, feeds the microorganisms on your skin, helping to protect and balance the microbiome.
The BHA, salicylic acid, in Crystal Clear deeply cleanses pores whilst breaking down congestion. It helps minimise breakouts and reduce the appearance of blackheads. Antimicrobial and antiseptic ingredients like cypress and rosemary help to break down oil and dirt, without stripping your skin of its natural goodness.
Tip: All BYBI products are potent and Crystal Clear is no exception. You only have to use a pea-sized amount and it smells just wonderful.
Add extra hydration using a soothing facial mist
Mega Mist works as a soothing and hydrating mist, with the humectant hyaluronic acid as the key-ingredient. Mega Mist works amazing as a plumping, glowing mist that holds on to moisture. Whilst aloe vera, algae and pomegranate soothes skin, rose, lemon balm and orange blossom floral waters help gently tone skin. Use Mega Mist to give your microbiome a hydrating layer before adding skincare. Use to refresh during the day for a settled, soothing glow.
Tip: Mega Mist works well both under make-up or on top as a setting spray. Can be used as a toner, sprayed onto hands and gently tapped onto face.
After cleansing your skin, we recommend adding a product that delivers moisture and fatty acids to strengthen and protect your skin.
Our Strawberry Booster is a softening booster made from 100% cold-pressed Strawberry Seed Oil. Strawberry seed oil is rich in Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids, delivering just the soft and potent nourishment your microbiota will love. It’s great for dry, flaky or irritated skin, which often occurs when the microbiota is disrupted or out of balance.
Strawberry Booster is also rich in the antioxidant ellagic acid, which helps repair skin damaged by UV-rays and pollution. Our Strawberry Booster helps reduce the visible signs of discolouration in skin, hyperpigmentation and loss of firmness whilst leaving skin bright soft and strong.
Your skin works hard at night to recover and rebalance, what you put on your skin in the late hours is almost as important as a healthy sleep pattern.
Night Nutrition is our restoring protein night cream and is like a smoothie for your microbiome. It’s high in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, ceramides and vitamins. Raspberry seed oil and superfood proteins rich in antioxidants & vitamins A, E and C help repair, strengthen and protect your skin whilst you sleep. Natural vitamin A from broccoli seed oil and omega-9 and omega-3 fatty acids helps nourish your skins whilst mango seed butter and oat kernel oil lock in moisture. The high content of lipids and ceramides helps prevent water loss leaving skin soft and happy. Your microbiome will be left happy, nourished and healthy indulged in 100% natural ingredients.
Tip: More of a mask person? Night Nutrition works well as a 15-min quick re-hydration boost to prep your skin before a night out.
Bonus info: Night Nutrition is made from 70% upcycled ingredients including clementine water, a by-product of the juicing industry.
For extra dry skin, mask overnight with a vegan, nourishing balm
Babe Balm is amazing when it comes to dry rough patches. Add to dry areas of skin and flaky cheeks if you need a nourishing boost. Shea butter and vegan fruit wax soften chapped, rough areas of skin and creates a protective barrier to lock in moisture. Antioxidant-rich coenzyme q10 and hibiscus oil help repair damaged skin and severe dryness whilst beta-carotene helps rebuild skin. Calming calendula helps soothe and nourish irritated skin.
Tip: Made without essential oils, Babe Balm can be used on babies, during pregnancy and by breastfeeding mummas. If your skin is very oily, we don’t recommend Babe Balm as an all over treatment, but it will still work wonders on your lips and cuticles.
