How to treat the skin concerns linked to breakouts

Pustules, comedones, papules, hormonal spots, blackheads, acne, congestion - whatever it is, having breakout prone skin is a minefield and that’s not even mentioning the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Who else has spent more time inspecting their skin than they’ve had hot dinners? Who’s shed tears of joy at their skin FINALLY clearing up, only for a breakout to rear its inflamed (and often pus filled) head once again?

The truth is, no matter how hard you try to embrace your skin, at times having acne-prone skin can be really disheartening - especially in adulthood. So how do you stop breakouts? How do you get clear skin? Well, whilst there isn’t a magic cure (sorry!) or a one-size fits all routine, these BYBI products have been formulated to help with skin issues commonly associated with breakouts.

Disclaimer: Acne is a medical condition, if you have persistent acne, then we recommend seeing your GP or dermatologist.

Excess sebum: Probably the main culprit of acne, oily skin & breakouts is excess sebum, AKA oil. Whilst our skin needs sebum to help protect our epidermis & dermis from environmental aggressors, when the sebaceous glands overproduce oil, this can lead to blocked pores, oily skin and all types of spots. Crystal Clear was created to control sebum production whilst also protecting the all important skin barrier so that skin isn’t stripped of the good stuff. Ingredients like natural salicylic acid, a BHA derived from white willow bark helps to break down any congestion, deeply penetrating & cleaning out pores whilst the inulin, a prebiotic, helps to literally feed the skin with healthy bacteria to keep the microbiome strong and healthy.

Use in the morning as a first cleanse or in the evening as a second cleanse, after an oil cleanser like Swipe Clean.

Inflammation: Using the power of cannabidiol, CBD Booster is a serious skin de-stressor that uses the power of cannabidiol to soothe inflammation and ease congestion. Since inflammation is linked to a whole heap of skin concerns like breakouts & hyper-pigmentation, applying CBD oil to the skin helps to calm & tackle these areas. Also don’t be put off that it’s an oil! We’ve combined our CBD with pure hemp seed oil, a non comedogenic ingredient meaning that whilst it’s a great skin-softener, it won’t clog pores and can actually help to regulate your skin’s sebum (natural oil) production. In fact, if you strip your skin of all oil, your skin will actually start to produce more. For oilier skin you’ll get a moisture hit without leading to further breakouts and skin will feel balanced.

Apply a few drops directly to the skin or mixed with another Booster or moisturiser, or as a targeted spot treatment.

Congestion: If you get small, surface level breakouts, blackheads and are prone to congestion, use an exfoliating treatment 1-2 times a week like Acid Gold - our clarifying AHA face mask. Containing exfoliating AHAs including lactic, glycolic, malic and tartaric, Acid Gold helps to break down dead skin cells which cause uneven texture, dullness and dryness, leaving your skin noticeably smoother & regenerated.

Papain & pumpkin enzymes work to increase cellular turnover & reduce bacteria in the skin which actively help to prevent breakouts and blemishes and ease congestion. Combined with sea buckthorn oil and moisturising agent glycerin, Acid Gold doesn’t strip or dry out the skin. Instead, skin feels balanced, clear and soft with visibly improved texture.

Depending on skin sensitivity, use 1-2 a week for brighter, smoother, calmer skin.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation: Right, so you’ve finally got your spots under control, but now you’re left with pesky post-inflammatory hyperpigmentaion (PIH). Caused by ‘injury’ to the skin from things like acne and breakouts, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation leaves the skin with flat spots of dark marks. To treat this, you need ingredients that increase cell turnover & brighten the skin. This is where Supercharge Serum comes in. Containing a powerful blend of 18 botanical oils, this serum helps to seriously brighten and repair dull, tired & pigmented skin. Natural ingredients like prickly pear and watermelon seed oil work to repair and replenish damaged skin, helping to decrease the appearance of scarring and hyperpigmentation and increase the skin's moisture levels. To increase skin cell turnover, Supercharge Serum contains jasmine, geranium and lemongrass, helping to shed old, dull and damaged skin, and encouraging the new fresh, bright skin to the top.

Supercharge Serum can be used as part of your AM or PM routine underneath your favourite moisturiser. We always recommend patch testing all new skincare products but as Supercharge Serum is potent and contains essential oils, it might not be suitable for very sensitive or skin with active flare ups.

We hope this helps! But remember, skincare is a journey and clear skin isn’t going to happen overnight. It takes time and dedication to reach your skin goals and for medical skin conditions, often a trip to the doctors. Blemishes and glowing, healthy skin aren’t mutually exclusive, so treat your skin and yourself with love and that’s all anyone else will see anyway.
