Salicylic Acid - What is it and why does your skin need it?
Acids are an important part of your skincare, despite the fact they sound slightly terrifying, and salicylic acid is no different. Head to our recent post for the DL on all acids, but to learn more about the decongesting, clarifying and spot-busting properties of salicylic acid specifically, read on!
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) whose main function is to help the skin exfoliate; shedding dead skin cells by breaking down the substance that holds them together. The great thing about exfoliating with acids as opposed to a physical exfoliator like a scrub (think coffee, apricot or sugar scrubs) is that you get the brightening, renewing effects without stressing your skin out; physical exfoliators will often aggravate the skin, causing micro-tears or encouraging it to over-produce oil.
Unlike their sisters AHAs, BHAs have the powerful ability to penetrate pores and work their exfoliating magic, which makes salicylic acid the go-to for unclogging areas of congestion, blackheads and whiteheads. So whilst it helps to clear the top surface of the skin by sloughing dead skin cells, you also get a deeper exfoliation that can help with textural issues and breakouts. It’s because of this that salicylic acid is widely used in the treatment of acne-prone skin or for those who suffer from spots and congestion. It’s a brilliant ingredient if you’re after clear, smooth and balanced skin.
Salicylic acid can be found in our Crystal Clear gel cleanser and works as a deep clean for your complexion; working out the build up of dirt and grime in your pores whilst clarifying and brightening the skin. It’s gentle enough to be used every day, ideally as part of a double cleanse (go Swipe Clean first to get rid of makeup), and doesn’t strip the skin. The combination of prebiotics and rock quartz crystal are hugely balancing and healing, and ensure the impact of the salicylic acid is powerful but in no way aggravating.
